Bavarian Enchantment...
Nestled between the Karwendel and Wetterstein mountain ranges near the Austrian border lies the picturesque health resort of Mittenwald. This market town in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district is just under 100 km from Munich.
Mittenwald was first mentioned in documents as in media silva in 1096. It received market rights in 1305.
In 1689, Matthias Klotz established violin making in Mittenwald. To this day, the town remains a significant center for string and plucked instruments in Germany.
The tourism industry began in the town around 1912 with the construction of the railway line between Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Innsbruck.
