The Post Hotel in Mittenwald, one of the oldest and most traditional inns in the region, has a fascinating history deeply rooted in the culture and heritage of the Bavarian Alps.

Early History and Foundation

  • Historical Mittenwald 17th Century: The building that now houses the Post Hotel was used as an inn to accommodate travelers and traders on the trade routes through the Alps.
  • 1719: The building is first documented as "Gasthof zur Post," serving as a resting place for stagecoaches and travelers, explaining its name.

18th Century

  • Historical Mittenwald1750s: Mittenwald becomes known for its thriving trade and violin making. The Gasthof zur Post benefits from the increasing number of traders and craftsmen visiting the town.
  • 1790: The Gasthof zur Post is expanded to meet the growing demands and increasing number of guests.

19th Century

  • Historical Mittenwald1806: Bavaria becomes a kingdom, and Mittenwald becomes part of the new administrative structure. The Gasthof zur Post remains an important stop for travelers.
  • 1830: With improved road connections through the Alps, the number of travelers increases. The Gasthof zur Post is renovated and modernized.
  • 1888: With the opening of the railway line through Mittenwald, the Gasthof zur Post loses its significance as a postal station. Nevertheless, it remains a popular inn for tourists and travelers.

20th Century

  • Historical Mittenwald1910: The Post Hotel is modernized to enhance guest comfort. Electric lighting and modern sanitary facilities are introduced.
  • 1914-1918: During World War I, the hotel temporarily serves as accommodation for soldiers and travelers on their way to the front.
  • 1920s: In the post-war years, the Post Hotel experiences an upswing as tourism returns to the region.
  • 1939-1945: During World War II, the hotel remains operational despite a sharp decline in tourism. It once again serves as accommodation for soldiers and refugees.
  • 1950s: After the war, the hotel is renovated and modernized again to support tourism in the post-war period.
  • 1970s: A comprehensive renovation of the Post Hotel is carried out. Modern amenities such as central heating and new bathrooms are installed while preserving the historical character of the building.

21st Century

  • 2000s: The Post Hotel continues to adapt to modern requirements. A wellness area is added, and the rooms are equipped with modern technologies.
  • Today: The Post Hotel is a popular destination for tourists looking to enjoy the beauty of the Bavarian Alps. It offers a blend of historical charm and modern amenities, remaining an integral part of Mittenwald's cultural and tourist landscape.
